The Triplet Story

As Ronnie has told you, we wanted to have children immediately. So we tried for two years. Our last resort was to try Invetro Fertilization. So on the first try.... you guessed it.....TRIPLETS. At first I was like, "Oh Crap!" Then it was like, "Yeah, we can do this!" Needless to say it is a journey that has taken us were we never dreamed we'd be. With both the good and bad of it. Well, I'll skip down to the "exciting" part. Up until this time everything was going as planned....at least MY plan. But on Saturday, May 10, 2003, the night before Mother's Day, my water broke. I was only 23 weeks and 5 days and this was NOT supposed to be happening. We rushed to the hospital and they admitted me. Now, time for a little schooling. (At 23 weeks is a very sensitive time for babies and making it even to the next week buys a little time for other baby things to develop.) Now back to the story. So skip now to Tuesday, keep in mind that I was still contracting since Saturday. Without all the details, I gave birth, (NATURALLY) no drugs, to our daughter, Lily Grace. I was a seven centimeters and push three times and she was out. As soon as she came out they rushed her outside and down the hall to where the Pediatricians could work on her. Ronnie told me later that he heard her crying. He said it was like a little kitten crying. Well, Wednesday morning somewhere around 2:00 am the doctor came in and said that Lily's lungs had not been strong enough to fight the infection that she had developed from being out of her water to long and she did not make it. They brought her to me so I could hold her. That was the only time I had gotten to hold her. She was so little and looked so fragile. She had thick, dark brown hair and long eye lashes (which she got from me). It was really a sweet moment. I just wish I could've held her longer. I'm sorry...am I making you cry? Ok, I'll stop. Not to worry, some funny stuff is coming later. Wednesday night about 9:30pm, my fever from the infection spiked and to keep the other two babies out of danger we had to deliver them. The doctors started me on Pitocin (inducing medicine) and gave me and Epidural. This is where the "fun" begins. Well, for starters we (Ronnie, me, my mom and dad and my mother- in- law) were literally up ALL night. By mid-morning Thursday my Epidural stopped and I started feeling all contractions. They couldn't get anyone to give me more meds because both anesthesiologists were in emergency surgeries and could not break away. So time past and past and past. Finally, we got the doctor who could give the medicine and everything went back to so-called normal. Meaning the Epidural was working. But then my 2nd water broke and we called for a doctor to come check me. He said I was at 9 or 9 1/2 centimeters and it would be a little bit longer but he asked me to push just a little. Well, I did!!! And out popped Madeline Elizabeth still in her sack. Her water actually broke as soon as she came out. Side Note: What I forgot to mention was that they wanted me to deliver in the O.R. so that they had access to baby kits and the Critical Care Nursery Pediatricians and with just one family member present. Well, guess what none of that happen. Back to the Story: We were in my room; I was on a regular bed, none of those fancy stirrups or anything. Madeline is in the hands of the doctor and he is asking one of the nurses to get him a baby kit. So they run down to the O.R. get a baby kit and the Pediatricians are called....STAT and everyone comes rushing in. Well then, Trevor Kent makes his grand entrance backwards. He is breach and his body comes "sliding out" as my husband says and then he stops. His head is caught. So with the doctors helping hands I push a little and Trevor pops the rest of the way out. Amongst all the babies popping out my Mother-in-law (bless her) was throwing down paper towels on the floor and trying to mop up blood and water with her foot so that the doctors wouldn't slip. While my mother threw back the bed sheets so as to cover more blood and water so that the doctor could sit down on the bed instead of looking like a catcher waiting for a baseball to come out at any time. WHAT A TRIP!!! After all of that Mom and Babies are fine. Whew!!!
